Ayat-ayat Cinta: A Film About Love, Faith and Polygamy
Ayat-ayat Cinta (Verses of Love) is a 2008 Indonesian romantic drama film directed by Hanung Bramantyo and based on the bestselling novel of the same name by Habiburrahman El Shirazy . The film stars Fedi Nuril, Rianti Cartwright, Carissa Putri, Melanie Putria and Zaskia Adya Mecca as the main characters. The film tells the story of Fahri, an Indonesian student who studies Islam at Al-Azhar University in Cairo, Egypt, and his complicated relationships with four women: Maria, a Coptic Christian neighbor who admires him; Nurul, a fellow Indonesian student who has feelings for him; Noura, an abused Egyptian neighbor who accuses him of rape; and Aisha, a Turkish-German woman who falls in love with him.

Plot Summary
Fahri is a devout Muslim who lives modestly and works as a translator of religious books to support his studies at Al-Azhar University. He has a plan to marry after he finishes his thesis, but he does not have any experience with women. He only has his grandmother, mother and sister as his female relatives. His life changes when he meets four different women who have an impact on him.
Maria is his neighbor who lives in the same apartment building. She is a Coptic Christian who respects Islam and admires Fahri for his knowledge of the Quran. She secretly writes her feelings for Fahri in her diary, but never confesses them to him.
Nurul is another Indonesian student who also studies at Al-Azhar. She is the daughter of a famous cleric in Indonesia, and she has a crush on Fahri. However, she is shy and insecure, and Fahri thinks that he is unworthy of her.
Noura is also Fahri's neighbor who suffers from domestic violence by her father. Fahri feels sorry for her and tries to help her. However, Noura misunderstands Fahri's kindness as love, and she becomes obsessed with him. One day, she sneaks into Fahri's room and tries to seduce him, but Fahri rejects her. She then accuses him of raping her and reports him to the police.
Aisha is a beautiful Turkish-German woman who meets Fahri on the subway. She witnesses Fahri defending Islam from a prejudiced man who insults it. She is impressed by Fahri's courage and intelligence, and she falls in love with him. She later visits him at his apartment and proposes to him.
Fahri accepts Aisha's proposal and marries her. However, he still faces the trial for Noura's accusation. He also learns that Maria has a terminal illness and that Nurul still loves him. He decides to visit Maria at the hospital and Nurul at her home to say goodbye to them. However, both Maria and Nurul ask Fahri to marry them as well. Fahri is confused and conflicted, but he eventually agrees to marry them both as his second and third wives, with Aisha's consent.
The film ends with Fahri being acquitted of Noura's charge after she confesses that she lied. He then lives happily with his three wives in Cairo.
